Bennett Brook Railway - First steam service of 2024 - 4K
Please enjoy this video of the first Bennett Brook Railway steam-hauled service of 2024.
Due to a very dry summer and autumn in Perth, local fire danger restrictions have prevented us from running steam-hauled trains, but recent rains have lowered the fire danger to acceptable levels.
A modification to the locomotive has been made whereby the exhaust steam from the train brake (the ejector) has been plumbed into the locomotive smokebox, resulting in much quieter operation. Thanks to member David N. for his excellent design work on this modification.
This video, ua-cam.com/video/9U-d62HbEUA/v-deo.html provides a good comparison of the modification's effect.

This documentary, produced by National Geographic in 1984, covers the history of trains from steam engines to diesels, nostalgically remembering the days when trains bridged the continents, empowered the pioneers, and ferried troops. Also follows the iconic Orient Express on one of its routes. I remember watching this documentary when a young boy. It is a personal favourite of mine.

For anyone thinking the locomotive was oil fired or fired with a mechanical coal feeder take a look at around 5 minutes in. The fireman is working hard with his shovel.

Nice job with the ballast broom. Don't park your cars too close to the track when using it. What's on the front of the machine? Is it a blade?

Great to take a trip down memory lane, been 15 years since travelled on Perth Transport system, drove out of Beckenham for Swan Transit. Still the fastest and most efficient system I think between the states. I’m in Victoria since 2009 and we’re still way behind the 8 ball.

'Extravagant Victorian Railways' built by 'Cheap Labour' to be replaced by 'Waiter Service For Businessmen as well as Ordinary Passengers.' I assume this was made during a Tory Government tenure, it certainly appeals to a, err, 'Certain Type.' Same Railway Cutting Tactics still used: Cut service to a minimum, say one train just after the morning rush hour and one just before the evening rush hour: Point to "Falling Passenger Numbers" etc etc. Another money making scheme employed by the Brits: don't publish local train times in order to push people onto the premium Airport Service.

Something that struck me about this video was the phrase "room for all sorts of brains and abilities". To modern ears, it sounds incredibly inclusive and progressive for the time. I would never have imagined the railways would be where I'd see such sentiment so early. Delightful!

This was incredibly interesting to watch - I'm generally interested in steam engines, and in horses, and have never been terribly interested in diesel or electric locomotive power, but this was a fascinating look into how railways very much are highly specialized in carrying fixed freight. It has given me things to think about with regards to my views on moving the majority of freight back off the roads, and onto the rail network, in order to avoid quite so many wildlife habitats being fragmented by roads and highways - clearly, small freight quantities are ill-suited to the railways, and yet the continuing growth of the road network, and the pollution that comes with it, is something that I think we need to come to a reckoning with if we're to still have human life on this planet many generations from now.

8:42 WOW! I'm watching this in awe! Is that really how they used to cut rails? (A rhetorical question) Just looking at the little rig he's got there, it would take all day to cut through that rail! Surely they had air or steam powered tools to speed up the process somewhat? Unless I'm missing something here. Doesnt seem to be powered by my eye.
